Defining Ecclesiophobia Ecclesiophobia, or the fear of churches, refers to either of two separate fears: A fear of the building itselfA fear of what the church represents If your fear of churches is actually a phobia, it is, by definition, life-limiting. Fear of Other Religions Religious Buildings If you are comfortable in your own church, synagogue, mosque or other religious institution, but fear those affiliated with other religions, you may be suffering from a form of xenophobia, which is a fear of strangers. Some denominations teach their followers that other religions are untrustworthy or even dangerous. You may be afraid that spending time in a house of worship belonging to another religion is sacrilegious. Some atheists and agnostics report that they are uncomfortable or fearful in any religious building, regardless of affiliation. Do You Fit the Criteria for a True Phobia? If you have an intense fear of churches, you might be wondering whether its a phobia. If you go to a therapist, she will help you figure this out by comparing your symptoms to the criteria for diagnosis from the American Psychiatric Association (APA). A true phobia of churches would fall into the category of specific phobia, the fear of a certain object or situation. However, you may also have another phobia that presents similar symptoms. The hollow men recognize that their Hour of Death is rapidly coming to an end and therefore want to be no nearer in deaths dream kingdom. At first, they suggest to wear such deliberate disguisesRats coat, crowskin behaving as the wind behaves for they feel that by masquerading themselves, Death will pass over them. This attempt, however, does not last long for they realize they cannot fool Death. In effect, they search for other means. One could argue that this is properly the beginning of the hollow mens movement to redemption; a recognition of the utter nullity of man by himself, of man in total exile from God (Hargrove 91). They are beginning to fathom for the first time that no amount of earthly pleading can reverse the inevitable outcome of doom. As a result, they turn to God in prayer. They begin in a conversational attempt to plead with God by making an apology as they form prayers of broken stone. The hollow men have spent an existence without prayer and therefore, have difficulty expressing their plea for mercy. There is internal conflict that arises in the beseeching of prayer to God and consequently, it is interspersed with interruptions of individual thinking. It is as if the hollow men are uncertain as to whether or not they should even attempt prayer at this point because they remind themselves that salvation is hopeless because The eyes are not here There are no eyes here to show them compassion However, the unformed emotional wish for Christ reenters as the hollow men contradict their lack of eyes with a final new light of hope (Lucy 144). The fate of the hollow men is Sightless, unless The eyes reappear as the perpetual star Multifoliate rose (emphasis added). In this instance, the eyes are transposed into those of the Virgin Mary (Jain 208). One could assume then, at this point, that the hollow men have given their soulless selves over to God, in hopes that these eyes have transformed into eyes of mercy. In this last plea for forgiveness and hope, the hollow men reach the final moment of their lives hence Falls the Shadow. All that is certain in the closing summary of the poem is this Shadow of sin, of imperfection, of the paralysis of the will that has led the hollow men to this point. (Jain 209) Intermingled in the mess of the Shadows imposition, the men cry out using the Lords Prayer, For Thine is the Kingdom/For Thine is/Life is/For Thine is the, continuing their request of forgiveness until the end. The line is suddenly cut off, though, showing an abrupt end to the hollow men and an uncertainty of their outcome. The despair and the aspiration of the hollow men appear to have culminated only in a plaintive murmur, a whining, broken cry as they release their lives (Jain 211). The mystery, however, remains as to whom they have released their lives, for Eliot creates a sense of ambiguity by way of the allusion to the worlds end. Some critics would argue that the hollow men have made a choice that they could have achieved reality but were afraid and avoided it; they have chosen to make their habitation in deaths dream kingdom, rather than in deaths other kingdom. They have reverted to an afterlife that contains pain (Lucy 144.) On the other hand, other critics would say that the whimper, suggesting the cry of a baby, may be the utterance of one who is born into a new spiritual life (Jain 211). Although both suggestions are plausible solutions to the conclusion of The Hollow Men, one could also argue that the poems denouement was purposefully excluded by Eliot the reader does not know where the hollow men were taken: Heaven, Hell, or neither. This deliberate lack of resolution serves two purposes: to draw a parallel between the hollow mens lack of discernment to their uncertain destiny and to serve as a warning to all human beings of the importance of leading a life of faith and direction. At the time when T.S. Eliot wrote The Hollow Men, in the 1920s, he was unsure of where he fit in society. He was experiencing feelings of alienation from both England and France and was not sure to which denomination of faith he belonged. Thus, he was extremely conscious of the manner in which society presented itself. He saw a world of stuffed men filled with material obsessions and a lack of true direction. Consequently, he felt it necessary for all people, including himself, to understand the severity of life after death without steadfast faith (Gordon) This didactic essence of the poem reaches to many people and by the end, a sense of responsibility and fault is shared among the reader and the portrayed hollow men. The desolation resounding throughout the piece creates an unpleasant image that leaves an unappealing aftertaste few could enjoy. As a result, T.S. Eliots purpose was accomplished. Sex is another part of life that often deeply affects people in very different ways, for instance, in the way they view the experience, or the way particular sexual encounters have affected them in the past. Love, of course, plays a major part in everyones life, whether it is the platonic, unconditional or romantic kind, and therefore obviously can affect people very deeply, like with the sex in the above poem, due to past encounters, or the way they v iew love. Again, like sex, love is not a subject to be viewed lightly, as it can be said to affect everything in life.Next we have Phenomenal Woman, which explores the way Angelou and other people view her, and how she feels you do not have to be cute or built to suit a fashion models size in order to be a successful woman in life. Instead, the poet feels it is not what youve got, but what you do with it, for example the fire in my eyes, or the ride of my breasts. Our lives are often much affected by the way we are viewed and also view ourselves, as it can affect everything, from the way we act around certain people, to the way we treat certain situations. Life itself can also affect the above factors, as we are often shaped by the events we experience. This is therefore a strong example of how life can touch someone, not softly.Men looks at the experience of a young girl, through a sexual encounter, possibly viewed as rape or the loss of virginity Shattered./ It is your juice/ Tha t runs down their legs. and how she feels about it; in this case, not very positive, as shown with the aforementioned quote, and also, Your mind pops, exploding fiercely, and Your body has slammed shut. Forever. As mentioned with Remembrance, it is most often experience that shapes who we are and how we feel and react to certain situations. Both the loss of virginity and rape are very serious matters, especially the latter, and so are very likely to affect people in strong ways. Touch me, life, not softly therefore relates to this strongly, as no one who ever as been raped could say it was a light experience or that they have not been touched by it in some way, as it is highly likely to have been a very negative experience.The penultimate poem is Refusal, focusing on the plight of a woman on her death bed, who will not deign to die unless she knows the partner she adores will be with her in her future lives, as she feels he has been in her other lives and lands. I defy my bodys has te is a key phrase of the poem, as the word defy is very strong and shows just how much the woman in question does not want to let go without knowing she will see her greatest love again. Refusal implies that it is not just life that touches us, not softly, but also the people we meet throughout life, as she is so enamoured by her love that she never wants to leave him, even after death, so he has clearly had a very large impact upon her life. The fact that she appears to believe in reincarnation That we will meet again,/ On other worlds some/ Future time undated. shows how she believes her love will prevail all, if she can meet her soulmate again and again in many different lives. Therefore, life can also touch us deeply through the people we are deigned to meet throughout our course upon earth, and the ways in which they affect us.The final poem is Just for a Time, looking at past relationships and how despite not liking reminiscing about past events, the narrator still does thi s and looks at the ways he loved his girl. While the first two stanzas reminisce about the past love, the final stanza explores how the narrator feels now, I dont spill tears/ On yesterdays years/ But honesty makes me say,/ You were a precious pearl. Again, it is often our relationships throughout life that very strongly affect the way we react to and feel about things as we are touched by, not softly.Overall, I believe that the first section of Maya Angelous poetry anthology is called Touch Me, Life, Not Softly as all of the poems mentioned above focus on events and experiences in life that shape us strongly, and imply that life does not let us get away with things easily. However, as Angelou appears to be telling life to do this to her, she is saying, that without life demanding so much from us and affecting us so wholly, we would not be the people we are, and would possibly be not as strong as we are.

Profile of Serial Killer Richard Angelo Richard Angelo was 26 years old when he went to work at Good Samaritan Hospital on Long Island in New York. He had a background of doing good things for people as a former Eagle Scout and volunteer fireman. He also had an out-of-control desire to be recognized as a hero. Background and Early Life Born on August 29, 1962, in West Islip, New York, Richard Angelo was the only child of  Joseph and Alice Angelo. The Angelos worked in  the educational sector - Joseph was a high school guidance counselor and Alice taught home economics. Richards childhood years were unremarkable. Neighbors described him as a nice boy with nice parents. After graduating in 1980 from St. John the Baptist Catholic High School, Angelo attended the State University of Stony Brook for two years. He was then accepted into a two-year nursing program at the State University at Farmingdale. Described as a quiet student who kept to himself, Angelo excelled in his studies and made the deans honor list each semester. He graduated in good standing in 1985. First Hospital Job Angelos first job as a registered nurse was in the burn unit at the Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow. He stayed there a year, then took a position at Brunswick Hospital in Amityville, Long Island. He left that position to move to Florida with his parents, but returned to Long Island alone, three months later, and began working at Good Samaritan Hospital. Playing Hero Richard Angelo quickly established himself as a highly competent and well-trained nurse. His calm demeanor was well fitted for the high stress of working the graveyard shift in an intensive care unit. He gained the trust of the doctors and other hospital personnel, but that wasnt enough for him. Unable to achieve the level of praise he desired in life, Angelo came up with a plan where he would inject drugs into patients at the hospital, bringing them to a near-death state. He would then show his heroic capabilities by helping to save his victims, impressing the doctors, co-workers and the patients with his expertise. For many, Angelos plan fell deathly short, and several patients died before he was able to intervene and save them from his deadly injections. Working from 11 pm to 7 am put Angelo into the perfect position to continue to work on his feeling of inadequacy, so much so that during his relatively short time at the Good Samaritan, there were 37 Code-Blue emergencies during his shift. Only 12 of the 37 patients lived to talk about their near death experience. Something to Feel Better Angelo, apparently not swayed by his inability to keep his victims alive, continued injecting patients with a combination of the paralyzing drugs, Pavulon and Anectine, sometimes telling the patient that he was giving them something which would make them feel better. Soon after administering the deadly cocktail, the patients would begin to feel numb and their breathing would become constricted as did their ability to communicate to nurses and doctors. Few could survive the deadly attack. Then on October 11, 1987, Angelo came under suspicion after one of his victims, Gerolamo Kucich, managed to use the call button for assistance after receiving an injection from Angelo. One of the nurses responding to his call for help took a urine sample and had it analyzed. The test proved positive for containing the drugs, Pavulon and Anectine, neither of which had been prescribed to Kucich. The following day Angelos locker and home were searched and police found vials of both drugs and Angelo was arrested. The bodies of several of the suspected victims were exhumed and tested for the deadly drugs. The test proved positive for the drugs on ten of the dead patients. Taped Confession Angelo eventually confessed to authorities, telling them during a taped interview, I wanted to create a situation where I would cause the patient to have some respiratory distress or some problem, and through my intervention or suggested intervention or whatever, come out looking like I knew what I was doing. I had no confidence in myself. I felt very inadequate. He was charged with multiple counts of second-degree murder. Multiple Personalities? His lawyers fought to prove that Angelo suffered from dissociative identity disorder, which meant he was able to disassociate himself completely from the crimes he committed and was unable to realize the risk of what he had done to the patients. In other words, he had multiple personalities which he could move in and out of, unaware of the actions of the other personality. The lawyers fought to prove this theory by introducing polygraph exams which Angelo had passed during questioning about the murdered patients, however, the judge did not allow the polygraph evidence into the court. Sentenced to 61 Years Angelo was convicted of two counts of depraved indifference murder (second-degree murder), one count of second-degree manslaughter, one count of criminally negligent homicide and six counts of assault with respect to five of the patients and was sentenced to 61 years to life.
